What counts as real traction?

Repeat usage, willingness to pay, and unprompted referrals from customers. Vanity metrics — signups, follower counts, press — predict almost nothing.

Top-of-funnel metrics that don't translate into retention. A million signups with no second visit is not traction.

What investors look for

Customers paying, coming back, telling others, and getting upset when the product breaks. That is the signal.
